This expert level, highly detailed, museum quality, Bibelot 1910 model is brand new, fully assembled and ready for display (not a kit). This Sonder Class half hull model was crafted in mahogany and tropical hard woods by the traditional plank on bulkhead method. After the bulkheads are laid and the hull lines trued, the hull is planked with individual wooden strips to form a smooth silhouette. The Bibelot 1910 model is then sanded, hand painted with white topsides and green bottom paint.
The half hull is then mounted on a ready to hang wooden plaque, with an engraved brass nameplate. Built & designed in 1910 by Nathanael G. Herreshoff to the German Sonder Class Rule and was used for German-American competition in the the years before World War I. She was so successful captained by Charles Francis Adams that she was bought by Kaiser Wilhelm. Racing in the waters around Kiel up till the 1930s, she was virtually unbeatable and became a legend in German yachting! Bibelot measured only 19' 4" on the waterline but had an overall length of 38' 2"!Her beam was 7' 5", had a draft of 5' 3" and displaced slightly more than 4, ooo pounds. The Bibelot was lost in the Kiel bombing of World War II.
In 1992 a replica the Bibelot II was built for Dr. Roman Hummelt of Germany by the Atrisans School of Rockport, Maine. The Sonder Class is still being raced on the lakes near Munich and Austria. During sea trials she excedded 13 knots on a 20 knot day.
At the Eggemoggin Reach Wooden Boat Race she almost caught the J-Boat Shamrock V until she snagged a lobster pot and damaged the rudder.
