New Old Stock, Open Box. Contents 100% complete and in excellent condition. Designed by Edward Burgess she was built at the George Lawley and Sons yard in South Boston, Massacusetts and launched May 26, 1885.For sails, Burgess chose the Irish-born sailmaker John McManus of McManus & Son, of Boston. The Puritan was an early combination of American and English designs with some of the depth of a cutter but beam and power of a sloop. It was built and skippered by John Malcom Ford. She defeated the New York Yacht Club's Priscilla then went on to defend the America's Cup against the British yacht Genesta, a traditional cutter. Puritan was a sloop of a little less than 30 metres with a good width and a center board which is characteristic of American boats of that class. She also had a certain draft and part of the ballast was fastened to the keel like English cutters. She was therefore a fairly sure boat. In 1885 she defended the America's Cup against the English cutter Genesta, winning in only two races, the first one with light wind, the second with wind of over 20 knots, confirming the superiority of the American hulls of this type of regatta.
