SSV Tabor Boy is a sail training vessel operated by Tabor Academy, a prestigious independent boarding school located in Marion, Massachusetts, known as The School by the Sea. Originally built in 1914 in the Netherlands as a North Sea pilot schooner (launched as Piet Hein), the vessel was later restored and repurposed for educational use.As a traditional gaff-rigged schooner, she serves as a floating classroom where students learn navigation, seamanship, leadership, teamwork, and marine science through offshore voyages along the U. Coast Guard-certified and has become a symbol of experiential education and character development at Tabor Academy, blending historic maritime heritage with modern educational outreach and youth development. Captain William Feeny Foster Jr. Born in Monterey, California, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill through NROTC and was commissioned in 1980. Over his career he held multiple leadership roles, including Executive Officer aboard USS Mount Whitney, and ultimately retired in 2008 with the rank of Captain.
His service earned him several honors, including the Legion of Merit and Defense Meritorious Service Medals. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a management consultant and later led a defense consulting group. He passed away on December 7, 2024, and was honored with full military honors. The plaque dedicated to him represents not only leadership of one of America's most iconic warships, but also his lasting educational impact and respected naval career.
